STA has announced major updates of their TMC service

STA has announced a major upgrade of their TMC service in Sweden that is now being fed by DATEX2 node. TMC-events are now broadcasted with precise location on the TERN+ road network. Norway and Denmark are currently working on a similar update using precise location. Additionally, SRA is now working on a 2011-update of their Swedish Location Table that should submitted to TISA for certification in June 2011. This new Table (ver. 2.4.) will be covering 22000 points of the Swedish road network. The current Swedish Location Table from SRA is available free of charge upon request, on the SRA website www.trafikverket.se/tmc

Intelligent Transport Systems will significantly improve Mobility and Traffic Safety according to Thomas Kuhn, Continental

In October Flanders’ DRIVE, the Flemish research institute for the automotive industry, celebrated its 10th anniversary in Brussels. Thomas Kuhn, Senior Manager Advanced Technologies Infotainment & Connectivity Continental Automotive, participated in the celebrations and gave a presentation on the Intelligent Transport Systems, supporting the improvement of Mobility and Traffic Safety.

According to Mr Kuhn, Continental’s ITS strategy embraces three main areas: safe mobility, sustained mobility (reducing impact on the environment by means of reducing CO2 emissions and avoiding traffic congestion) and intelligent mobility (providing sophisticated in-vehicle information management).

Current statistics concerning these three areas in the EU are very worrying and Continental is looking at a new approach; rather than attacking the present challenges conventionally by means of expanding road capacity, he stated that innovative cooperative ITS systems will help using the existing road network more efficiently while increasing safety significantly.

In particular, TPEG can be an important building block for the successful deployment of cooperative ITS systems, bridging from current RDS-TMC services to Vehicle-2-vehicle communication based services.

In summary, he concluded that with regards to safety aspects, ITS still needs to be further developed, but with regards to mobility, we can – and need – to start deploying systems.

He finished with a positive consideration: “ITS in Europe will be a success story and will be the blueprint for systems and services around the globe”

His presentation can be found here (from page 47).

BMW and Mediamobile team-up on real-time traffic information

French service-provider and TISA-Member Mediamobile announced that its real-time traffic information (RTTI) service will be integrated into BMW’s production vehicles equipped with “BMW ConnectedDrive”. The service will be available with the “BMW Connected Drive” option as of September. According to Vincent Godec - Mediamobile’s CEO – this deal “marks a milestone in our company’s development” as it makes Mediamobile BMW’s traffic information solutions provider for their entire model range, and all transmission technologies.

According to Mediamobile, BMW drivers will now benefit from real-time traffic event and incident information such as accidents, lane closures, road works; traffic flow and congestion information, and therefore users will be able to select the best itinerary, as well as alternative routes in case of congestion and/or incidents.

Furthermore, the TPEG-service from Mediamobile, based on TISA-specifications, will provide BMW vehicles that have the RTTI installed with access to detailed information, accuracy and responsiveness, which are superior to solutions using TMC-type standards.

Mediamobile has also developed an assessment and quality control tool for checking traffic data in all the countries covered, based on the new Traffic Flow QBench tool. The development of the Traffic Flow Qbench tool is undertaken by TISA in a dedicated Task-Force convened by Cartsen Lux (BMW).

For more information, visit Mediamobile website.
